Spider
The varieties of spiders most often encountered in Maine include the house spider, the wolf spider, and the jumping spider. Though generally considered beneficial, as they feed on many insect pests, some spiders may bite in self-defense.

Tick
The deer tick and dog tick are both common in Maine. The deer tick is a known carrier of Lyme disease, and is found mostly in coastal York and Cumberland counties. The more common dog tick is larger and can be a carrier for Rocky Mountan spotted fever.
