Pest Threat Assessment
Tick
The deer tick and dog tick are both common in Maine. The deer tick is a known carrier of Lyme disease, and is found mostly in coastal York and Cumberland counties. The more common dog tick is larger and can be a carrier for Rocky Mountan spotted fever.

Mosquito
Besides being a nuisance, mosquitos are known vectors for numerous diseases including malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis, West Nile virus, heartworm, and many others. Mosquitos breed extensively where there is standing water found including birdbaths, old tires, buckets, and empty flowerpots.
